THE ROLE OF LEXICOGRAPHY IN THE HISTORY OF TRANSLATION (THE EXAMPLE OF JADID LINGUISTS’ ACTIVITIES)

Abstract

This article explores the contributions of Jadid intellectuals to the development and preservation of the Uzbek language, translation, and lexicography from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The study highlights the philosophical and practical approaches of prominent figures such as Abdulla Qodiriy, Mahmudxo‘ja Behbudiy, Abdulla Avloniy, Abdulhamid Cho‘lpon, and G‘ozi Olim Yunusov in promoting linguistic purity, creating dictionaries, and standardizing terminology in various fields, including law, politics, and economics. Despite political repression during the Soviet era, their efforts ensured the survival and enrichment of the Uzbek language, laying the foundation for modern Uzbek literary and scientific terminology. The article also emphasizes the lasting significance of Jadid intellectuals’ work in contemporary language policy, education, and cultural identity, illustrating how historical awareness, linguistic development, and literary cultivation remain essential for national progress.
