The article analyses the distinctive features of political discourse and the analytical procedures used to interpret it. Political discourse is treated as a field defined by its participants, institutions and purposes rather than by a special vocabulary. The study draws on critical discourse analysis, conceptual metaphor theory and the theory of legitimation. The main features examined are the persuasive orientation of the text, the multiple addressee, the opposition between us and them, metaphorical framing, strategic vagueness and the recontextualisation of political speech in the media.
